As more and more of the experienced adjusters see retirement on the horizon, their collective knowledge base is facing a very significant vacuum. This is a problem that claims managers are facing more often as those in a position to leave the industry are doing that or planning to in the near future.

Liz Mouw is tough, but her standards are to protect the policyholders that she feels fiercely protective of and her company, CSAA. Heaven help the service provider whose prices or policies fall afoul of Miz Liz.

Liz started working for CSAA in 1969 in Sacramento, and after a career in retail, she felt she had gone to heaven with AAA and not working weekends or evenings. She transferred to Monterey, then San Jose and the Bay Area before returning to Sacramento in the claims area. “Triple A was always a good company to work for and they took care of their people in those days,” Liz remembers, “Whenever I needed to transfer for my husband’s job, I got the transfer that I needed.” “Three A made you feel like you were valued and went out of their way to show it.” Liz stated. “I’m so fortunate to have the supervisor that I have, Lynn Kohler. She is a wonderful person to work for and treats me like a peer. When I make mistakes, and I do even after all these years, Lynn makes me aware of the problem and we solve it together.”

‘Retirement? Oh my yes, I’ve thought of it” Liz said, “I would love to have more time to devote to my family, My three year old grandson is developmentally disabled and my daughter could use my help with him. I also would love to spend more time with my horses, and now my granddaughter is starting to ride so that would be fun. Gardening would be enjoyable if I didn’t have to try to cram it all in on the weekends.” “ I’d have lots of things to do, trust me.” Liz says with a laugh. “It’s possible that I can figure some things out financially to be able to do that in the near future but in the meantime I just keep doing my job. I can’t imagine working for another carrier so when I retire, I just want to be able to quit work and do what I want to do.”
